What is Archaeology?

In New Zealand, an archaeological site is defined as any site containing material relating to the pre-1900 human occupation of the country. This may include buildings, buried artefacts, shipwrecks, midden and human burials. Even if a property was built on or developed in the 20th century, there is a chance people may have been living or working there prior to 1900 and that archaeology is present on the property.

An Archaeological Authority (similar to a building consent) is required from Heritage New Zealand before any work that may affect an archaeological site can be undertaken. Erskine Archaeology can determine if an Authority is needed and manage the process from start to finish. We can liaise with Heritage New Zealand, land owners, local iwi and contractors to make the process as hassle free and affordable as possible for you.
